With an artistic background spanning over 25 years, the story of Dorothy Holmes Mohler’s journey as an artist is as captivating as her creations.

Brought up by parents who nurtured her love for art and nature, Dorothy has traveled extensively, absorbing the beauty of diverse landscapes and cultures, and channeling that inspiration into her work.

“I just want to paint…and perhaps create a spot of bright joy on someone’s wall along the way.” ~ Dorothy Holmes Mohler

Dorothy’s work masterfully combines an array of natural elements. Abundant in wildlife, avian subjects and striking florals, her pieces are a collection of mesmerizing contemporary abstracts.  Her preferred mediums include acrylic paint, India Ink, and colored pencils on wood surfaces—leaving the sides raw and blank for a unique touch.

Her artistic journey took a dramatic turn twenty-five years ago due to a traumatic brain injury, which she refers to as her “mixed blessing.” This life-altering event unexpectedly bestowed upon her an enhanced ability to perceive and render colors—a skill she didn’t possess prior to the injury. This “mixed blessing” keeps her sensitive to and deeply inspired by the keen beauty of nature, which is evident in her multi-layered approach to painting, combining multiple layers of paint and intuitive markings in a transformative process that brings her work to life.

Dorothy’s art reflects a universal connection to the world around her. Her pieces share joy and humor, that she hopes adds a spot of bright joy to someone’s wall.

In 2022, Dorothy moved from Oregon to the North Carolina Coast, where she now lives with her husband and a charming unruly group of pets. Although she grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and spent most of her adult life in the Western U.S., her current home in Eastern North Carolina offers a tree-top art studio surrounded by awe-inspiring nature. Here, Dorothy spends her days immersed in drawing, painting, and cherishing the simple joys of life.

In our upcoming virtual art show, “Stories We Tell”, Dorothy will be unveiling an exclusive new collection of wall art she’s created exclusively for Artburst Studios.  You can learn more about Dorothy and view more of her work on her official website “Tall Girl Studio“.
