Using layers of acrylic paint, graphite, and artist crayons, artist Julie Tarsha creates visual dialogues on large, unstretched canvases. Each time she steps into her studio it brings a reconnection to childlike enchantment, allowing her to explore, take risks, and believe in the magic of art.

Julie’s creative process is deeply influenced by the bold, rich beauty of the Sonoran desert. Raised in southern California, she discovered her love for the desert in her grandparents’ Tucson backyard, where she spent summers watering the cactus and capturing horny toads. This connection to the desert continues to fuel her work today.

“My joy is to surround myself with color and motion!”

In 2014, after retiring from a nursing career, Julie returned to her love of art full-time. She now enjoys a daily painting practice in her Phoenix home studio and regularly exhibits her work throughout the valley. These days, Julie is still “watering the cactus”, a personal metaphor for her desire to find and express the wonder within the ordinary.

Julie’s paintings evolve through periods of inquiry and response. She layers gestural marks until they form a coherent visual dialogue. This process allows her to capture the wonder and freedom she felt as a child, revealing intriguing connections, hidden meanings, and universal truths. With color and motion as her tools, Julie strives to create art that invites viewers to see the world with the same sense of wonder and magic she experiences in her studio.

Her latest collection of original pieces will be unveiled at our next virtual art show “Beyond Beautiful“, which opens on August 15th at 10am MDT. The show will close on August 17th at 6pm MDT. Be sure to create your free Collector Account early so you are prepared for the show open!
