Marie Powell is an artist with a true passion for mixed media. After a 19-year career as a high school teacher, she now spends her days in her studio on the Long Beach Peninsula in Washington State, creating beautiful works of art that blend printmaking and painting. Her daily commitment to her craft shines through the variety of techniques and materials she uses, which give her work a unique texture and depth.

Marie finds inspiration in her approach of often combining different forms of printmaking with painting. Her process involves integrating monotype, monoprint, silk screen, solar etching, collage, drawing, lino block, and wood block into her pieces. This versatility allows her to create on a range of substrates, including heavy rag papers, wood panels, and fine art canvases. The results are bold and colorful works that explore a range of subjects, from coastal scenes to floral designs, forests, and abstract forms.

“It’s About Discovery!”

Marie owns and operates her own gallery in Ilwaco, Washington, where she showcases her art. When she’s not working in the Pacific Northwest, she’s in Whangarei, New Zealand, drawing inspiration from the landscapes and cultures of both locations. Her art reflects the influence of these diverse environments, offering a unique perspective that blends vivid colors, strong contrasts, and abstracted imagery.

One of Marie’s standout techniques involves creating textured surfaces with hand-printed papers that are collaged onto canvas. She then draws the main image over this layered background, adding depth and complexity to each piece. To preserve her work, she finishes her paintings with three layers of Golden Archival Varnish, which ensures durability and longevity. This attention to detail and quality is a hallmark of her art.

Marie’s latest collection of original pieces will be unveiled at our next virtual art show “An Unexpected Twist“, which opens on Wednesday, May 29th at 10am MT. The show will close on Friday, May 31st at 6pm MT. Be sure to create your free Collector Account early so you are prepared for the show open!
