Kelly Austin-Rolo, a contemporary artist based in Denver, Colorado, is a true master of encaustic and mixed media. Her art expresses an intersection of urban, rural, and coastal landscapes, in many ways reflecting her own personal journey through different environments. Growing up in Lewes, Delaware, Kelly’s artistic style has evolved over the years, but her fascination with both the man-made and natural worlds remains at the core of her work.

Kelly’s encaustic art combines beeswax and pigment, allowing her to build up textures, scrape away layers, and fuse surfaces to create smooth, glass-like finishes. This unique medium offers endless possibilities for the creative process, with each piece reflecting a journey from creation to destruction and back again. The final result of Kelly’s work invites viewers to contemplate the connections between humanity and the natural environment.

“My art merges diverse mediums and techniques with the depth of encaustic, to create abstract compositions inspired by the natural and manmade world.”

Before settling in Denver, Kelly spent 15 years in New York City, where she worked as a corporate designer for top architectural firms. This experience influenced her artistic approach, giving her work a distinctive architectural quality. After moving to the rural countryside two hours north of Manhattan, she began to embrace a more intuitive style, focusing her work more on abstract landscapes.

Kelly’s art also draws inspiration from the fluidity and resilience of beeswax. She is captivated by its fragile yet durable nature, which allows her to create pieces that explore transparency, light, depth, and texture. Her compositions often organize organic elements into harmonious forms, reflecting her desire to explore the  delicate balance between the urban and the rural.

Now a recent transplant to Denver, Kelly continues to push the boundaries of her art. Her work invites viewers to embark on a journey through imagination, exploring the depths of the subconscious and the intricacies of emotion. Each piece offers a unique perspective on humanity’s connection with nature, capturing the beauty of landscapes that evolve over time. Her latest collection of original pieces will be unveiled at our next virtual art show “An Unexpected Twist“, which opens on Wednesday, May 29th at 10am MT. The show will close on Friday, May 31st at 6pm MT. Be sure to create your free Collector Account early so you are prepared for the show open!
