Laurie Mika is a captivating mixed-media artist, author, and workshop instructor. Her journey as a creative soul unfolds through a rich tapestry of experiences, blending a background in painting with a profound love for travel and teaching. Laurie’s artistic style takes on a distinctive form that is uniquely hers – she expertly crafts mixed-media mosaics using handmade polymer clay tiles but that’s just the beginning.

“Like an alchemist tinkering with a modern medium, I try to push the boundaries of polymer clay with its ability to mimic gold leaf and brocade, silvered tin and vintage lace.” – Lauire Mika

Influenced heavily by medieval and Renaissance art, Laurie’s work comes to life through gilded, ancient-feeling devotional panels, transforming shapes and figures into secular icons infused with personal narratives. Drawing inspiration from her globetrotting adventures and residency in East Africa, Laurie weaves together art and folk traditions to create incredibly detailed pieces that meld traditional and modern materials. Laurie, a modern-day alchemist, works her magic through the harmonious combination of disparate elements.

Beyond her studio, Laurie shares her unique style by teaching at renowned art retreats such as ArtFest, Art Unraveled, and international destinations like Reims, France, and Hacienda Mosaico in Mexico. Her teaching resonates at both national and international levels, embodying a passion for sharing the transformative power of mixed-media art.

Laurie’s creations have found their way into the pages of prestigious magazines like Expressions, Somerset Studio, and Altered Couture. Her work also graces the content of notable books such as “Mosaic Art and Style” and “Mixed Mania.” Laurie’s own book, “Mixed Media Mosaics,” has earned acclaim and rave reviews.

Laurie has been featured on HeartsArt Radio, Go-Make-Art in Australia, and Abbey of the Arts. Her cover art for the publication “Presence” showcases her multifaceted talent. Laurie’s presence extends beyond the studio to the small screen, where she has been featured on HGTV’s “Crafter’s Coast to Coast” and DIY network’s “Craft Lab.”

A self-professed time traveler, Laurie confesses to feeling born in the wrong century, envisioning a life as a scribe illuminating manuscripts in the middle ages.

In her latest artistic exploration, Laurie seamlessly blends the ancient with the modern, incorporating inspiration from AI-generated images into her work. Her latest collection invites us into a realm where storytelling and artistry coalesce, promising a mesmerizing journey through time in our upcoming show “Stories We Tell” (Feb 22-24).
