Artist Notes:
The first time it happened, she wasn't prepared.
One moment her paws were firmly planted on the ground. The next, she was airborne.
There was a brief moment of panic. A startled look. A frantic adjustment of ears. But then she glanced down and discovered something wonderful: the world looks entirely different from above.
After that, she was hooked.
Whenever the air felt a little blustery, she'd grab her leash and approach her human with the face — the one that turned him to mush: hopeful, loving, you-are-my-hero eyes. More often than not, it worked and off they'd go.
With a twitch of one ear and a tilt of the other, she'd catch the wind just right. Up she'd rise, floating above sidewalks, fences, and the occasional confused squirrel. A small adjustment would send her higher. Another would move her in a new direction. She became quite the navigator.
Her human eventually caught on. And because he loved seeing her so happy, whenever the weather forecaster called for gusty winds and issued a Small Dog Warning, he kept the leash handy.
Some dogs chase balls. Some ride skateboards. And some fly.
