This piece began with the unexpected structure and details of the kimono. I used a palette knife to apply thick layers of cold wax and vibrant color, scraping and blending to create a textured, almost sculptural effect. The orchids emerging from the “obi” sash balance the grandness of her kimono and symbolize her ethereal beauty. Her serene expression and the delicate removal of her “Getas” add a grounding human element to the otherwise fanciful scene.
