I think Ray of Sunshine may be the weirdest painting I’ve made for this show. Like many of my pieces, it began as a drawing at a restaurant, where I usually have no idea what I’m about to draw but am open enough to let the image decide what it wants to become. That approach can result in something interesting or something that should never see daylight again. Fortunately, this one survived the process.
The final painting stays close to the original sketch, but the addition of color brought the atmosphere into focus. The contrast between light and shadow sharpened the mood and revealed something far more intentional than I realized when I first drew it.
The creature itself feels like a kind of threshold—a window into a world of soft, fair-weather clouds suspended within an otherwise apocalyptic reality. He looks like he may not appreciate that kind of responsibility.
