Rapunzel

In my collection of art, I embarked on a journey of reimagination, taking simple but iconic characters as my starting point and then setting them adrift in a sea of "What if" questions. My process was far from linear; each character underwent numerous iterations as they took the reins, ultimately guiding the narrative in unexpected directions. Through many layers of paint, this cast of characters tried on various "costumes" of resilience, tenderness, and humor, ultimately settling into versions of themselves that felt authentic and compelling. I’m delighted to present these reimagined heroines and to learn about their next chapters as they make their way out into the world.

Creating Rapunzel:

 The tale of the enchanting beauty hidden away in an inaccessible tower has been passed down through generations. As a mother, I've noticed parallels between this timeless story and the experiences of my own daughter as she navigates her teenage years. It's perhaps no surprise, then, that my interpretation of Rapunzel evolved from the traditional fairy tale into a more contemporary retelling of the iconic adolescent.

In this updated version, Rapunzel retains her captivating charm, clad in an oversized hoodie and sporting pink streaks in her hair. Despite the modern attire, her yearning gaze and angsty demeanor endure, capturing the universal journey of young women as they yearn for freedom, connection, and self-discovery amidst the challenges of adolescence.
