The idea for Mockingbirds began with a completely controlled and sophisticated artistic process involving me enthusiastically throwing powdered charcoal onto a piece of paper. After the splashing, smearing, and general abuse of the surface, I stepped back to see what might emerge from the shadows, searching for faces in the chaos. Basically, cloud-watching for weirdos.
Very little of that initial image changed afterward. The final painting remains remarkably close to that first accidental drawing and hopefully preserves the slightly haunted energy that sparked it in the first place.
