Artist Notes: I created this piece in one sitting — something I rarely do — while waiting to hear a court ruling that would impact many people I love. There was a suspended, breathless quality to that waiting: a sense of powerlessness in the face of forces far beyond me.
The raw, ebbing strokes reflect that external chaos — the turmoil, fear, and constant stream of unsettling news. The world feels out of my hands. And yet, the eyes remain clear.
And yet, the eyes remain clear.
That clarity became the anchor of the piece. Not defiance exactly, and not denial — more a quiet act of being. A refusal to look away. In a world that feels out of my hands, the gaze is the one thing that remains steady. The work holds that tension: vulnerability without collapse, tenderness without naivety.
There is fear in this painting, but there is also softness. The same world that feels chaotic and frightening is also full of resilience, of small and radical acts of care. The rawness of the brushwork echoes my own exposure in that moment — open, uncertain, and deeply affected — but also my belief that clarity and tenderness can coexist with upheaval.
This piece is less about holding it together and more about remaining present while everything shifts. It is a portrait of witnessing.
