Frankie reflects a growing fascination I’ve had recently with weathered, textured skin—surfaces that feel lived-in and suggest a history all their own. The original drawing that sparked this piece came from a few years ago, before I began exploring that kind of depth, and it lacked many of the wrinkles, scars, and personality that define the final painting.
One thing I kept from the original drawing was the stitches across his temple. I liked the idea of a Frankenstein-like figure shaped not just by creation, but by experience—like life has continued happening to him long after the villagers with torches lost interest.
The composition moves in extremely close, focusing tightly on his face so I could push as much texture, detail, and character into the painting as possible. He may look intimidating, but he also looks like he’s very tired of explaining himself.
