Cinderella

In my collection of art, I embarked on a journey of reimagination, taking simple but iconic characters as my starting point and then setting them adrift in a sea of "What if" questions. My process was far from linear; each character underwent numerous iterations as they took the reins, ultimately guiding the narrative in unexpected directions. Through many layers of paint, this cast of characters tried on various "costumes" of resilience, tenderness, and humor, ultimately settling into versions of themselves that felt authentic and compelling. I’m delighted to present these reimagined heroines and to learn about their next chapters as they make their way out into the world.

Creating Cinderella:
 
Despite the numerous retellings, Cinderella's tale remains one of hardship - from the tragic loss of her parents to enduring the abusive treatment of her stepfamily, her path is fraught with challenges. Yet, amidst the trials, there's a scene in the story that always portrays Cinderella as blissfully happy: the enchanted evening at the ball as the clock ticks towards midnight.

But what if this iconic scene unfolded differently?

What if Cinderella, not one for late nights, preferred to slip away by 9:15? What if the prince lacked the dashing charm she'd anticipated, or the palace fare failed to tantalize her taste buds? What if, as an introvert, she found the grand gathering overwhelming after just an hour? And what if she longed for footwear proffering cushion over prescribed arch support?

While the image of the radiant princess-to-be waltzing towards midnight is enchanting, there’s something endearing and perhaps a bit more relatable to this dear one’s expression. And who knows? After a restful night's sleep and a hearty breakfast, she still may have ended up living happily ever after.
