Every trip from Portland, OR, down to Eugene to see our daughter meant at least a few quick “drive-by” barn photos out the window. The vast farmland, the open sky, the scattered structures — I loved all of it. On that sunny day, I was most interested in the shadows. They defined the structure with strong, angled forms.
Back in the studio, I cropped the image decisively, tightening the composition so it became less about a landscape and more about structure and design. I painted over collage layers and used rulers to extend and emphasize the lines, leaning into the geometry of the roof and the rhythm of those shadows.
Against the openness of the farmland, the barn felt steady — a quiet, confident presence. By layering collage, bold shapes, loose marks, and intentional drips, I kept the structure recognizable while pushing it toward a more abstract, modern interpretation of that quick roadside moment.
