Artist Lucy Schappy cherishes color, light, and space as essential elements in her life and art. Growing up on the prairies, she found solace in nature, whether it was lying in the grass watching clouds or spending rainy days drawing. Her love for the outdoors and her imaginative spirit shaped her artistic journey from a young age.

At 13, a transformative art class at the Edmonton Art Gallery opened her eyes to the possibilities of art. This passion for creation persisted even as she pursued a degree in dentistry. After graduating in 1990, Lucy moved to Vancouver Island, where the mountains, forests, and ocean became her muse. The artistic community in the Comox Valley embraced her, fostering her growth as an artist.

Living a creative life means choosing the path unknown; Lucy has lived by this. Painting is an extension of her freedom and self expression.

Lucy worked as a dentist for ten years, raising her two children before fully committing to her art in 2000. Her travels to Morocco and Europe left a lasting impression, inspiring her with the vibrant colors and light of these exotic places. Influenced by artists like Paul Klee, Matisse, and Diebenkorn, Lucy developed her unique style, characterized by dynamic shapes, bold colors, and a sense of wonder.

Working primarily with oil and acrylic paints, Lucy begins her pieces with loose shapes, gradually refining them into rhythmic images. Her art reflects her love for life and her optimistic spirit, capturing the beauty and magic of the world around her. Her recent works explore themes of strength, beauty, and community, often featuring horses and strong women in vibrant, sunlit scenes.

Lucy’s home-based studio on Vancouver Island, situated on the estuary of the K’omoks First Nation, provides endless inspiration. Surrounded by the ever-changing natural landscape, her art is a testament to her deep connection with nature and her continuous quest for discovery and expression.

Her latest collection of original pieces will be unveiled at our next virtual art show “Beyond Beautiful“, which opens on August 15th at 10am MDT. The show will close on August 17th at 6pm MDT. Be sure to create your free Collector Account early so you are prepared for the show open!
