Lisa Call’s journey as an artist is centered around fabric. Starting with plain white cloth, Lisa creates her own colors and textures using dyes and paints, transforming the fabric into her personal palette. This initial step, which she likens to finger painting, is where the creative process begins.
“My abstract textile paintings explore memory, movement, possibility and adventure. The inclusion of mark making in my most recent work allows me to explore layering of complex patterns.”
Once her fabric is ready, Lisa cuts it and arranges the pieces into dynamic compositions. This stage, she says, is the most challenging. It’s a balance between planning and improvisation, like working with a puzzle where the pieces are always shifting. But it’s a challenge she embraces.
Lisa’s work is further enhanced by intricate marks made with hand-carved stamps and sewing tools. The final step in her process involves hours of stitching, layering thread to create texture. This repetitive act of sewing has become her favorite part of the process, providing a meditative rhythm that brings her art to life.
Having moved from Denver, Colorado, to New Zealand, Lisa’s work reflects themes of adventure and connection. Her art explores relationships and how disconnection can shape them, a topic that resonates deeply as she navigates life in a new country. Lisa’s award-winning fabric art is exhibited globally, and her exploration of these themes continues to evolve with each piece she creates.
Her latest collection of original pieces will be unveiled at our next virtual art show “Fancy That“, which opens on November 14th at 10am MST. The show will close on November 16th at 4pm MST. Be sure to create your free Collector Account early so you are prepared for the show open!
