Gregory Gorham, a Vancouver, Washington-based artist, has been deeply influenced by nature and water throughout his life. Growing up in northern Michigan, surrounded by forests, lakes, and rivers, Gregory began drawing and painting the natural landscapes that inspired him. Today, his work continues to reflect this connection, incorporating the beauty of his surroundings in the Pacific Northwest.
“My goal as an artist is to impart a joyous experience through my use of color, shape, texture and pleasurable composition to my viewer.”
Now living near the Long Beach Peninsula, Gregory’s work has expanded to include marine scenes from local fishing communities like Ilwaco, Westport, and Astoria. His paintings of harbors, fishing vessels, and marshlands capture the essence of these maritime settings, influenced by his local travels and experiences. Known for his vibrant use of color and Fauvist style, Gregory brings these scenes to life with a combination of careful planning and spontaneous bursts of creativity.
When it comes to his tree paintings, Gregory takes a more fluid approach. He begins with expressive strokes of color and then steps back to see what emerges. This intuitive process often leads to new discoveries in his work, which he revisits over time to refine. For Gregory, the act of painting is an immersive experience—one that starts early in the morning when the world around him is still and calm.
With a career spanning technical illustration and commercial art, Gregory has now focused on his fine art. His work is currently exhibited in various galleries, including Marie Powell Gallery at Ilwaco Marina Dockside, where visitors can see his oil paintings and linoleum block prints.
His latest collection of original pieces will be unveiled at our next virtual art show “Fancy That“, which opens on November 14th at 10am MST. The show will close on November 16th at 4pm MST. Be sure to create your free Collector Account early so you are prepared for the show open!
