Before I was a full-time studio artist, I had a career in commercial printing. I worked hard. Now, I still work hard, but my studio is my workplace and I determine the projects and processes that will be the work of my hands. My daily routine combines the discipline of showing up to do the work and the joy of what I am creating.

“Things are complicated!” Yes. And what could be more interesting? Collaged art from original fabric IS complicated: lots of steps. For me it’s the perfect way to explore complex ideas and memories.

About Me

The friends I love most are ones who have been through some serious “stuff” – and survived. They know not to look at the world simply or with glib sayings. The earthiness and wisdom I feel from this kind of person is part of what I hope to pour into my artwork. I spend hours in my studio every day working out complex surfaces, with layers of things to uncover, and new things for the viewer to discover on each visit to the work.

Examples of My Work

Fun Facts

Language- I speak pretty fluent kindergarten-ese. As a classroom volunteer, I enjoy getting down to kid level and talking one-on-one with children about what they are drawing and writing.
(Not So) Guilty Pleasure – An afternoon swim in the beautiful natural spring that’s just a few miles from my home. The water stays 72 degrees year-round. Aaaaahhhh!
Poetry – It’s how I start my day. I keep books by three or four favorite poets at a time in my reading pile and allow them to welcome me into morning.
The Problem with Tea – is that it’s not coffee. I could just never pull myself out of bed to drink tea. Mornings (also mid-mornings and mid-afternoons) are for coffee.
Kitchen Claim to Fame – I am the designated Tupperware-container-labeler in the household. Leftovers go into the container then get a masking tape label and magic marker wording. Inside our freezer is beautiful!

More About Me

What do you wish you could tell your younger artist self?

The images you are creating are supposed to be ABOUT something. The purpose of art is not to draw or paint accurately, (Though these are great skills to have.) The purpose is to communicate. Whatever skills you’ve developed are to get to the story or meaning.

If your life had a theme song, which song would it be?

Bette Midler, “I’m Beautiful, Dammit!” Unfortunately, like many girls, when I was young I did not know enough to sing this song. I wish somebody had sung it to me.

What one (art) item can you not do or go without?

My big ol’ industrial worktable. It’s studio center-of-the-universe. It’s where I cut fabric. It’s where I collage. It’s where I paint and print. I can stand on it to reach storage shelves. It’s a beautiful beast.
