Meet Alissa...

"The process of making is just as important, if not more, than the completion of a final product."

Alissa Davies is an intuitive, process-oriented painter who creates abstract acrylic and mixed media paintings. She is known for her colorful, emotion-filled work that is playful and interesting, as well as deep-felt and honest. First and foremost, Davies art-making is a non-verbal expression of her internal landscape and her paintings go through many layers and iterations before composition, color relationships and movement considerations come into play to finish a piece. Her work has been collected across North America and she has been featured in group and solo shows in Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, New York City, and Maine, her beloved home state. Davies lives and works in Carbondale, CO and finds inspiration from the natural world and from watching her two children make art.

Fun Facts

I have lived in the mountains for 20+ years but a big piece of my heart is connected to the ocean of Maine, where I grew up.

I spent my junior year of college in the big city of Chicago, trying out art school at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago...I learned so much that year.

I have a blue-eyed, bushy-tailed Australian Shepherd named Oso who is a constant source of delight and humor. I could have a pack of Aussies!

I did my first triathlon this past summer and I loved the physical challenge of doing something new.

If I wasn't an artist, I would be a bookstore owner, a florist, an art therapist, or a fashion designer!

More About Me

Which places, people, or moments inspire you the most?

Anywhere in nature, regardless of whether it is the forest or the sea, is inspiring in regards to colors, patterns and shapes. I find my work very influenced by seasonal changes and love being in sync with the natural world in that way through art-making. Watching children make art is also completely inspiring because there is no inner critic rearing its head while they create; the pure bliss of making marks and the curiosity of materials is leading the way.

What, if anything, is playing in the background while you create?

I usually have a Pandora station on while I work that is playing fun music to move to, Maggie Rogers being a fave of mine. Occasionally, I will listen to a podcast but definitely have to be in the right frame of mind to be listening that intently to something while painting.

Tell us about your art studio.

When we moved into our new house we decided to make the garage into a studio/ family room because it had a heated slab floor and the garage doors were in poor shape. The doors were replaced by windows that fill the lofty room with a ton of natural light. I love having really tall walls so I can work big and having the space to spread out projects and series. I share the space with a day bed and my son's drum set (we set parameters to never be creatively working at the same time!)
