This elegant lady and her peculiar companion began, as many of my paintings do, as a quick pen-and-ink sketch on a restaurant napkin while waiting for food to arrive. Once the drawing is finished, I photograph it and leave the original behind with the server—possibly alongside a slightly concerning impression of my mental state.
Some sketches are one-and-done disasters. Others refuse to leave me alone.
Eclaire and Fuzzball belonged firmly to the second category. First drawn more than a decade ago, the pair lingered in my sketchbooks and subconscious, slowly evolving until they finally clawed, floated, or politely wandered their way into a finished painting.
